God and Time

The Bible is a fascinating book. It gives us glimpses of God, if only from the limited human understanding of its authors, who were inspired by the Holy Spirit. So I’m going to take it as a given that the Bible does not lie, but again, the Holy Spirit worked through human instruments in the writing.

If we agree that God: knows all, never changes, has no beginning nor end, and has no deceit in Him, can we attempt to have any inkling of how God relates to time?

I’m including here some ideas that my husband gave me, as we had a good discussion on this theme.

So, God created time; however, He is outside of time. We as humans don’t have a clue how that works, but there it is! Here are some Bible quotes relating to time:

Luke 18:7-8: ‘and will not God grant justice to his chosen ones who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long in helping them? I tell you, he will quickly grant justice to them. And yet, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on earth?”’ Comment: What does “quickly” mean for God? So often, don’t we ask God, “How long, O Lord?”

2 Peter 3:8-9: “But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one dayThe Lord is not slow about his promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance.” Comment: Ah, here is a clue, perhaps obvious; God has a different concept of time than we do.

Revelation 22:7: ‘“See, I am coming soon! Blessed is the one who keeps the words of the prophecy of this book.”’ Revelation 22:20: ‘The one who testifies to these things says, “Surely I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus!” Comment: What is “soon” for God? Bible verses can have many layers of meaning. Certain scholars say that Revelation was written before the siege of Jerusalem in 70 A.D.; the verse could refer to God’s judgment coming that year. Or it may refer to Jesus Second Coming, or to both.

But I gained a powerful insight in discussing all this with my husband. So often I have felt desolate, even somewhat abandoned by God, because “nothing seems to be happening,” or the changes I would desire (often in myself) don’t seem to be coming to fruition. But, hopefully looking at things more from God’s point of view, HE REALLY DOES CARE; He is just doing things in His own timing. What a comfort to know God’s care. Let me always remember that He has a good plan, with the best timing.

Carry Me

Holy Spirit, carry me –
I cannot walk alone.
Son of God, deliver me
Unto my heav’nly home.
Father God, create in me
Love that for sin atones.

Saints in heaven, pray for me
For graces needed here.
Saints on earth, please do the same
Else I will fall, I fear.
Holy ones, in heav’n, on earth –
Help me love Jesus dear.

The road is long, the way so hard,
With sin and strife replete.
Yet, Jesus does a work in me,
A work He will complete.

This Broken World

This broken world of suffering souls;
So many hurting — it’s out of control.

We need a Savior, a God Who can mend.
We need a Father, Who loves without end.

We need the Spirit, Who gives us the power
To overcome Satan in ungodly hour.

Time to surrender your will unto His.
Let Him live in you, and give you His gifts.

Days in the Doldrums

Days in the doldrums —
No breath of air —
Heat hanging like limp hair.

Is this our fate?
To sit paralyzed by hate,
Unable to move?

Or will we let the Spirit’s breath,
Like freshening breeze,
Cool hearts oppressed by dread dis-ease,
And so bring deepening love?

How can we move
Without His power?
The darkest hour
Is brightened by
The Spirit’s power.

Gift from Above

Heaven is singing,
The choruses ringing,
Of God’s ever-love

Abiding in lightness,
In darkness, the brightness –
The Spirit, the dove

Gives strength to our weakness;
From pride, giving meekness –
The gift from above

Come Down, Come Down

Come down, come down, Lord Jesus,
And feed your hungry sheep.

Come down, come down, oh Father,
Bring water from the deep.

Come down, oh Holy Spirit,
Refresh our weary souls.

Come down to earth,
And give new birth,
Let sin and sadness
Transform to gladness.

Cast doubt and fear
Away from here.

Let dark deeds die
And hatred lie
Lifeless
And defeated.

Lift up our souls
And take control.
Forgive our sins;
Bring life within.

Let parch-ed tongues
Your wine imbibe —
Refreshing pools
Bring on the cool
Of souls made bright
Within Your light.

A Psalm for Today

Dance, dance,
Dance to the Lord.
Sing and shout His praises always —
Dance to the Lord.

God has visited His people!
He has not abandoned us;
He has not left us orphaned.

He is a sure Boat in troubled water,
A Rock in shifting sands,
A Bridge across deep chasms;
He is our Life Preserver.

Though violence is all around me,
He will keep my soul safe.
Though my body be ravaged,
He will not abandon me.

Though He brings us low,
He will again raise us up.
Though He chastises,
He will again comfort us.

God’s Word lives forever;
It cannot die.

Who can know the ways of the Lord?
Give all to Him,
And He will make your paths straight.

Spirit’s Freshness

The misty morning,
The sea-salt air,
The flowers blooming,
Without a care.

A fresh beginning,
The day starts new.
Our spirits filling
With purest dew.

The freshness waning
As day grows old.
With faith sustaining,
We must be bold.

When sadness threatens,
When fear seems strong,
The Spirit will come
With fresh’ning song.

Healing Rain

Rush of the rain,
In waves and showers.
Thirsty the earth,
Now will come flowers.

Like Holy Spirit
Comes the rain.
Watering soul
And life again.

Dry was the earth
And hard as iron.
Dead was my soul
‘Til caught on fire.

Spirit of God
Will now break forth.
Like little seedling,
Life brings hope.

Wash Me Clean

(Inspired by the heavy rain today.

I felt it was washing me clean as I drove along in my car.)

Wash me clean, Oh Lord!

Like drops of rain that coalesce,

Cleanse me with Your tenderness —

Oh, wash me clean.

Like rivers rushing to the sea,

Like waterfalls that roar at me,

Like river rapids wild and free —

Wash me clean.

With Holy Spirit water let

My soul revive and not forget —

My sins were scarlet —

Now washed clean.

Let rain fall down from up above,

Cleanse the stain of sin with love,

All filth and dirt are washed away;

Close by Your side my soul must stay.
