Unrelenting Love

Speechless and mute —
Words can’t express —
The depth of Your love’s
Tenderness

Boundless, infinite —
Your love divine —
Extending through
All place and time

Patient, enduring –
Deep wounds now healing —
Fills all our yearning

The wages of sin —
God’s redemption reins in

Aft’ Adam’s fall
Your mercy cures all

Grief

Was there some comfort
I could have given here?
A song to sing,
That could have stopped the tears?

Did I not smile,
Nor give a fond embrace,
When sadness threatened
Or sorrow creased your face?

Did I ignore you
When you were so forlorn?
Or turn away
When you by men were scorned?

How does one soul
Give solace to another?
How can one person
A broken heart uncover?

Then gently heal,
As surgeon of the heart –
At first some pain,
But mending then does start.

On My Walk

On my walk
I meet smiling faces,
Though some are sad
Or even mad.

But most are glad
To fill stale lungs
With fine, fresh air.

I meet dogs that sniff
At my legs and hands —
They think it’s grand.

And people jogging
Or maybe texting –
It can be vexing
(Though I do it, too).

The air I breathe,
It plants a seed
Of nature in my heart.

I make a new start –
My brain rewired;
I’m now inspired.

We Can Always Dream

Once upon a time
There was innocence
And sometimes people cared
For the littlest ones

And sometimes marriages were mended
For the sake of the children
And parents sacrificed
To make a good home

And men would give up dreams
For a higher calling,
Glad to sacrifice
For something bigger than themselves —
(Where is George Bailey?)

And once upon a time
People knew that life was sacred —
And were grateful just to be alive

And maybe once upon a time
Never was  —
But it does
Exist in some people, in some places

And maybe once upon a time
Can never be —
But we can always dream

Wait a Minute

When you want your own way,

Can you stop and just say,

“Wait a minute”?

When it has to be thus

And you cause such a fuss,

Can I ask you to pause, and say

“Wait a minute”?

Do you feel your effect?

Is it logic you reject?

Since you can’t self-adjust —

You think all others must?

Let’s pause now and think,

Come back from the brink,

And say to each other,

“Wait a minute”

I Dream of the Sea

I live
Past the hills
Between the ocean and me

That teasing smell
Of sea-salt air –
Hints of it drift by …

With the memories
Of clean, windswept cliffs,
Of sand and drifts,
Of seagulls’ cries,
Of lullabies

I dream of the times
When I could freely lie
On the sun-warmed sand —
And of clean, pure air,
Refreshed from care

And of children’s days –
Timeless and forever.

Some Comfort Lend

I did not ask to be here –
Yet, I am.

And still,
I have a choice –

To beat bitterly
Against my course,

Or choosing otherwise,
To take

Life’s ups and downs
As lessons –

For life’s sake.

And ‘long the way,
May I some comfort lend

To fellow travelers –
Until life’s certain end.

Morning Reveille

[Reveille:  “a signal given on a musical instrument
(such as a bugle or drum)
in the early morning
to call soldiers or sailors to duty.
Rhymes with “heavily”.

The battle rages on,
Must get into the fray.
As evil forces
Take their courses,
What good can I do today?

Before I get out of bed,
Devil’s trying to take me down,
But Jesus’ strength
Will recompense —
What good will I do today?

The world looks so strong,
But I must keep going on.
The way things seem
Might be a screen –
Can I do some good today?

Must persevere, it’s true;
Not look at circumstance,
Believe God’s word,
Though life’s absurd –
He’ll bless me with good today.

Just take one step at a time,
Must live in trust sublime,
And leave the rest
To God’s good sense –
Jesus helps me do good today.
