Autumn Waning

Gone are the bright leaves of the fall,
And barren branches stand so tall,
The wind cuts through my meager clothes;
A bit of chill upon my nose.

The sky so dreary, and people weary,
But pink-tinged clouds at sunset shout
Of beauty gracing —
Silver-lined clouds lacing.

And still the air is not so cold.
But wintry temper’tures so bold
Will soon bring flurries and people hurrying
To still the chill within their souls.

A Piece of Heaven

What a gift to walk today

‘Midst falling leaves, by river’s run.

To hear the birds and crickets sing,

Walk under trees in dappled sun.

I do not know this wild wood-land,

Suburban-bred, not woodsman’s child.

Yet, not so wild as it could be;

The asphalt makes the trail seem mild.

Some leaves that fell, so many pressed

By feet and wheels, a thousand times,

As if the leaves on trail embossed,

Of passing life to be the signs.

And mild, too, the weath’r today;

It draws the people out to play

They walk, they talk, they bike, they run.

A peaceful time; most smile and wave.

In wilder places I have been,

But urban trails, they make me smile.

Oasis in a crowded world,

A piece of heaven for a while.

Ridin’ on the Wave

Ridin’ on the wave of God’s love —
It can be precarious,
It’s sometimes hilarious,
But don’t be nefarious —
Just ride it, ride on.

As we ride the wave of God’s love —
Our balance let’s keep,
His truth and love seek,
Be humble and meek —
Keep ridin’, keep on.

To ride on the wave of God’s love —
Let go and surrender,
Receive His love tender,
His grace do not hinder —
Let go and ride on.

… And if you should fall —
Attend to His call;
Get up and stand tall …

California Autumn

It’s raining redwood seeds
and flocks of geese
dance noisily over my head.

Cool night air, alive with life,
comes through my window;
it smells so fertile.

No snow as yet,
and better yet,
the rain may come.

The promise of rain
is teasing us.

If rain will come,
the earth will bloom again —
and so my heart.

Gotta Keep Believing

Gotta keep believing,
Though so much contradicts.
People think that I’m a fool,
And devil plays his tricks.

People that I’m trusting
Seem to disappoint.
But maybe I mistakenly
Misplaced my frail hope?

Need a clearer vision
Of what God wants for me.
Don’t seem to know the answers
For questions bugging me.

The road keeps getting darker —
Here’s where true faith comes in.
I’m teet’ring on a tightrope,
Can’t seem to trust in Him.

How long to be in exile?
How long out in the cold?
Lord, help me to surrender,
To wait upon Your throne.

Have I lost Your vision,
Has pride put me in chains?
I’ll wait upon Your answer
And then be free again.

Am I disobeying?
Did I blindly fall?
I don’t have all the answers;
I’ll give it to You all.

Utterly Weak

Why do I suffer?
Why do I fall?
Is it a lack of something within?
Is it a deafness, blindness, sin?

Is it my fault,
A weakness large?
Is it an ignorant, stubborn heart?

Or perhaps all these,
Seized on to torment,
By an enemy fierce
Who confusion foments?

Your grace do I seek;
I am utterly weak.
My eyes cannot see;
My ears wrongly hear.
Help me to trust
In You — that I must.
