Selfless Love

Jesus, Mary and Joseph are amazing examples of selfless love  Even in the midst of great joy, grief, pain, or challenges, they thought of the welfare of others.

Mary, upon learning that she would conceive Jesus the Messiah, the son of God, went off to help her cousin Elizabeth, who was also with child, though further along in her pregnancy.  At the wedding in Cana, Mary thought of the distress of a married couple running out of wine.  Mary also stood at the cross of Jesus when many had deserted Him.

We never hear Joseph, Mary’s husband, speak a word in the Bible.  But his actions speak loudly.  Like his namesake in the Old Testament, he was a dreamer, and as far as we know, he always obeyed God’s leading, which often came through dreams.  No matter the embarrassment (of Mary’s pregnancy), or inconvenience (having to travel long distances or pull up roots), he obeyed God and fulfilled his role as protector of Mary and Jesus.

Jesus, when he heard of his cousin John the Baptist’s beheading, went off to grieve privately, but when the crowds discovered His location, he had compassion on them and healed their diseases.  Later that day, he multiplied loaves and fishes to feed the crowd.  How often in our grief do we want to just curl up in a ball and pull the covers over our head?

While Jesus suffered excruciating pain on the cross, he still thought of us.  He prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

When we have a vision of how God wants us to cooperate in His plan, we, too, can be selfless, through His grace!

Gotta Keep Believing

Gotta keep believing,
Though so much contradicts.
People think that I’m a fool,
And devil plays his tricks.

People that I’m trusting
Seem to disappoint.
But maybe I mistakenly
Misplaced my frail hope?

Need a clearer vision
Of what God wants for me.
Don’t seem to know the answers
For questions bugging me.

The road keeps getting darker —
Here’s where true faith comes in.
I’m teet’ring on a tightrope,
Can’t seem to trust in Him.

How long to be in exile?
How long out in the cold?
Lord, help me to surrender,
To wait upon Your throne.

Have I lost Your vision,
Has pride put me in chains?
I’ll wait upon Your answer
And then be free again.

Am I disobeying?
Did I blindly fall?
I don’t have all the answers;
I’ll give it to You all.

Agony is all I feel
Until I get to You and see,
Until I let You get to me
And set me free.

Struggling, striving,
Ever hiding,
Not abiding,
Until surrender.

When I let myself let go,
When you live in me and grow,
When I let You set me free,
Is when I see.

I catch the glimpses from above,
I’m sometimes drowned within Your love,
But other times I lose the vision,
Have no focus; feel division.

I thank You for the battle won,
I thank You for Your Holy Son,
For Him who died upon a tree
And will complete good work in me.

The Light

On the mountain top I saw

A vision of a would-be world

Some people seemed like angels,

Beings of light-amazing;

Not God, but God-infused.

The world seemed to glow

And I wondered

If I looked different too.

God smiled at me,

And suddenly

I knew:

He loved me too.

I took the light down to the valley,

Hoping others would see.

My face did not glow like Moses;

How silly of me.

I must let Your light shine through;

If others do not see, let it be.

Let me not hide the light

Out of fear.

This  light, this fire

Burns within me.

I only need to fan the flames

By spending time with You.

No one can quench this fire;

Once lit, it burns forever.
