A Sense of Wonder

Our vision can grow stale and pale,
A shrinking sense of wonder
At all the things that God can do —
Tear unbelief asunder!

As Jesus took a child by hand
And said, let’s imitate them,
Let awe and wonder now increase —
Prepare for His new kingdom!

As children trust unwittingly,
May we ourselves be trusting
In God who ever faithful is
Unlike our human fam’ly.

From trust to fear and back to trust,
Through childhood, middle, and old age,
As we, God’s children, come aware —
Unlearn the lies of bondage!

Unnoticed

Black butterfly
On angel’s wings.
A brown and common
Bird that sings.

A blade of grass
That no one sees.
A quiet child,
A bright sunbeam.

They pass her by —
Nothing unusual.
She sits and sighs —
It’s life as usual.

Only a Shadow

Today I see Your beauty,
An ever-changing sight,
But really just a shadow —
Creation mirrors Your light.

The wonders You have fashioned
Are merely slightest glimpse
Of Your majestic glory,
Your awesome pow’r intense.

The roaring river waters,
The waves that rise and fall,
The quietness of shallows,
The soaring eagle’s call.

But sure Your greatest wonder,
The utmost height of all,
Is how You love Your creatures,
Though oft’ we gravely fall.
