Prayer for Racial Reconciliation

Lord, you made every human being in Your image.
Each person, no matter their color, economic status, or anything else,
Is precious in Your eyes.
Each person contains within them a spark of the divine.
Yet, we fail to see this.  We fail miserably.
Many of those in power do not share their power,
Sometimes the rich do not share their wealth.
Or, even “good people” are unaware of the suffering of others.
The poor and the weak often despise themselves,
Not realizing their great value and worth.

Our nation is deeply wounded.
The wound is hundreds of years old.
Anger and frustration boil beneath the surface.
And yet, and yet,
When You change hearts, something new can happen.

Give us new eyes, new hearts.
If we have material wealth, let us share it with others.
If we have gifts of encouragement, of education,
Let us use them to lift others up.
If we are poor, weak, or feel powerless,
Let us not succumb to fear, discouragement, or despair.

Let us see others with Your eyes,
Not the eyes of corrupted man,
Who looks only at ways to bolster his weak ego.
Not the eyes that look only at the surface,
At outward appearance, possessions, or achievements,
But eyes that see Your beauty and goodness in each person.

Give us the courage to reach out to those who seem different from us,
And to accept their friendly overtures.
Heal our fears, worries, anxieties.
Challenge our prejudices, faulty beliefs, and hatreds.

Let those who stir up hatred of people be thwarted.
Let those who have been injured find the grace to eventually forgive,
For an unforgiving heart injures only itself.
Let justice be done for them.

We thank you for Your mercy to fallen mankind.
For without Your mercy, there is no hope.

Amen.

In Your Eyes

A tiny speck, a mote of dust.

One of millions — of wind, a tiny gust.

A tiny atom, or particle minute.

All but invisible; a trivial pursuit.

So insignificant, mostly unknown.

Almost invisible — like a bird now flown.

But in Your eyes, Lord, as Your gaze falls on me,

I am soon made whole, and touch eternity.

The Airport

[A composite of my experiences and others’]

People bustling —
Sounds of a crowd.
Little babies
Crying out loud.

All of humanity
Compressed in one space.
A microcosm
Of our human race.

Flights delayed —
Sleep on the floor.
Jet lag had me
Run into a door.

As a matter of fact,
The food turned out great.
People were friendly
Even though late.

Air conditioning —
Incredible blessing.
Otherwise,
There’d be more stressing.

Many languages,
People of the globe.
Many faces,
And languages told.

And over it all
The Lord of the earth
Is watching each one,
And gives each one worth.

Have You Got My Back?

Feeling alone
And forlorn.
There’s nobody home.

Must keep on track,
Have you got my back?
Help me, Lord.

I know I’ll get through this,
With God I can do this,
But it takes so long.

You’re changing me daily;
I’m feeling so fraily.
My God is my strength.

Sing Like the Lark

Look to Him, look to Him,
Though you wander in the dark.
Fly high, take wing,
Sing like the lark.

He will triumph,
He will win,
He will overcome your sin –
Let Him in.

Stay strong, keep on,
Like the eagle you will be
Flying on to destiny.

Fly high, do not fear,
Your Lord and Master,
He draws near.

Thanksgiving Prayer

I thank you, Lord,
For the gift of this new day.
You created me out of love,
And only out of love;
You did not need me.

Thank you, Lord,
For the warmth of the sun on my skin
And the chill in the air,
Which spurs me out of lazy inactivity.

Thank you for genuine friendship,
For without it life would be truly dreary.

Thank you, Lord,
For the people who somehow annoy me,
For they teach me unconditional love.

Someday, Lord,
I may be able to genuinely thank you
For those who have deeply hurt me,
For by Your grace,
And only by Your grace,
They have made me stronger,
More compassionate,
And able to empathize with others’ hurt.

Thank you, Lord,
For your patience with me, a sinner.

Thank you, Lord,
For all the hurts, trials, sufferings,
Annoyances, discomfort,
Awkwardness and shame;
For without these
I may never have looked for You,
And been complacent in my comfort.

By Your grace,
You make all things new again.
