Blessed Night
Blessed night
Stars are bright
Calming silence
Peaceful quietness
Sleep so softly
Clouds are lofty
Gentle rain
Song’s refrain
Birds sing brightly
Sky is lightening
Dawn begins
Joy within
Blessed night
Stars are bright
Calming silence
Peaceful quietness
Sleep so softly
Clouds are lofty
Gentle rain
Song’s refrain
Birds sing brightly
Sky is lightening
Dawn begins
Joy within
In the middle of the night,
I hear distantly
A roaring motorcycle
And trucks on the freeway.
Near dawn, I wake again.
The freeway is humming
With many more vehicles.
Then a bird nearby
Is singing,
And squirrels run gaily
Across the roof.
And nothing can compare
To the morning air –
Not any other wonderful thing.
MORNING BEGINS AGAIN
Morning begins again —
Fresh breeze upon my skin,
The promise of new things,
The hummingbird on wing.
The slate, it still is blank.
I pray, and yes, give thanks
For new beginnings,
For hearts now turning,
For all my yearnings.
The mourning dove, it coos.
I pray that I won’t lose
My hope, my faith, my patience here —
Nor let dread problems
Bring on fear.
So let our souls be light
Like angels, now take flight.
Give all to God
Though thoughts may prod —
The day comes after night.
If all the stars like dust were blown
From palm of God upon the earth,
And fell like snow into the night —
Their glitt’ring shine,
Their silent birth —
And whispered quiet melody
Of dancing angels
Far and wide,
Of tinkling, tiny, windy chimes —
They sing to me
Of happy times.
Oh, universe
Now will burst forth,
In praise and song
To God divine.
