Old Lady’s Blues

Well, the air’s too wet,
I’m covered in sweat.
The chiggers are ‘bitin;
Soon there’ll be lightnin’.

But I’ve got food to eat,
A roof over my head,
Even have A/C,
And people who love me.

Well, the news is bad;
It’s makin’ me sad.
My back is in pain;
Might be goin’ insane.

But I’ve got good friends,
A garden to tend,
Cats who like to cuddle,
Rain enough for some puddles.

Well, I spilled the dinner,
Don’t seem to be a winner.
The grandbaby’s cryin’;
Life can be tryin’.

But there’s always a light;
Your smile is so bright.
We may not agree,
But you’re talkin’ with me!

Just heard the doctor’s verdict,
Says my blood pressure’s imperfect
Not to mention blood sugar,
Extra carbs in the cooker.

But I’ve got Jesus beside me;
There’s nothing can fright me.
Well, maybe things will,
But He’ll help me, until …

I can see through the night,
And hear music bright,
Be calm in the storm,
‘Til He brings me home.

My Psalm of Thanksgiving

[I wrote this after I had an infected kidney stone episode on 2/2/2023. An infected kidney could lead to sepsis. Was in hospital two nights. Doctor put a stent in and drained the infection. 2/14/2023 — Kidney stone and stent removed. Much better now!]

I praise you, O Lord,
For you have rescued me from the path to death.
Once, twice, and three times now,
And perhaps many more that I’m not aware of.

I thank You for those who are healers —
Doctors, nurses, nurse aides, and their helpers.
Please guide them in their work
And give them Your wisdom.

Now, Lord, help me learn from this.
May I take the best care of my body,
The temple of Your Holy Spirit.

May I use my good health
To heal others with the gifts You’ve given me —
Mostly encouragement, I think!

[I also pray to have the gift
To praise You
Right in the midst of any hardship,
For You have a plan for me.]

May Your name be praised
Over all the earth!

Thanksgiving Prayer

I thank you, Lord,
For the gift of this new day.
You created me out of love,
And only out of love;
You did not need me.

Thank you, Lord,
For the warmth of the sun on my skin
And the chill in the air,
Which spurs me out of lazy inactivity.

Thank you for genuine friendship,
For without it life would be truly dreary.

Thank you, Lord,
For the people who somehow annoy me,
For they teach me unconditional love.

Someday, Lord,
I may be able to genuinely thank you
For those who have deeply hurt me,
For by Your grace,
And only by Your grace,
They have made me stronger,
More compassionate,
And able to empathize with others’ hurt.

Thank you, Lord,
For your patience with me, a sinner.

Thank you, Lord,
For all the hurts, trials, sufferings,
Annoyances, discomfort,
Awkwardness and shame;
For without these
I may never have looked for You,
And been complacent in my comfort.

By Your grace,
You make all things new again.
