The Animal Chorus

We don’t live in the wilderness
But, nevertheless,
Plenty of creatures entertain us
‘Round ‘bout my house

Seagulls and crows –
Didn’t think they’d mix
But they’re up to tricks
Like picking our roof apart

They congregate in noisy flocks
They roost in the ash and redwood trees
They wheel and turn in the chill, clear sky

(Once when the wind was rising
In the California summer
And fires began to rage in the distance
The crows wheeled ominously above
With loud and raucous screeching)

Squirrels add their voice to the chorus
With angry squawking at my cat
Or spiraling up (or down) the trees,
Chasing each other

Butterflies bring silent rest notes
To the symphony

I hear a hum – nothing less
Than a hummingbird
Doing acrobatic dips and swirls

And in summer
The fence lizard skitters shyly away

The animal chorus –
Perhaps out of tune,
But welcome in the silence

In Dust and Rain

You lifted me up, for a while.
I flew like a butterfly on weightless wings,
But I had to come down to earth.

I am a worm now, crawling in the mud.
But worms make way for growing things,
For trees, and flowers, and birds that sing.

It’s all the same,
In dust and rain,
In joy or pain.

Love has to hurt —
So life gives birth,
And pain gives way to joy.

Transition

A new day is dawning;
Transition begins.
The bright butterfly
From chrysalis transcends.

What once upon
The earth did crawl,
Spreads glorious wings,
Though frail and small.

Glimpses of Your Glory

Glimpses of your glory,
Shadows of your grace.
When I hear the story –
How You saved the human race.

Just around the corner,
A ray of light does shine.
Can’t seem to wholly grasp it –
Just like a butterfly.

Out of my eye’s corner,
Just around the bend,
A blinding light is shining;
I cannot comprehend.
