What Comfort

What comfort I receive
When gentle raindrops fall
Upon my roof — and I
Am dry beneath it all.

What comfort I now feel
When warm inside my bed,
Like mom who wrapped me in her arms,
And always kept me fed.

What grief I sense for those
Who under freeways sleep
Who struggle every day to find
Security to keep.

My heart is broken now
For families torn apart.
For strife and anger uncontained,
The wounds of broken hearts.

O, gentle raindrops, tell
Those suffering now from want,
That there’s a God Who loves them still;
He loves your broken heart.

I Long to Dwell

Self-knowledge:

I long to dwell in a gentle place

Where acceptance doesn’t depend on race.

Where sins are forgiven, each person driven

By self-knowledge of their own sin.

Understanding:

I long to dwell where people smile;

They say to me, “Sit down a while.”

They listen quietly, as do I;

And understanding, we say “aye”.

Safety:

I long to dwell where children are safe

No longer victims of hate or rape.

No longer killed inside the womb,

Nor harmed by parents’ angry gloom.

Growth:

I long to dwell with an inner peace,

Having confessed my anger and grief,

No longer concerned what others think —

Nor under their opinions shrink.

Humility:

I long to love as Jesus loves,

To fly like an eagle or a dove,

To have a purpose that fits like a glove,

And remember my gifts have come from above.

What Are Memories For?

What are memories for?
To haunt, to taunt, and still harass?
To calm, to heal, forgive at last?
What are memories for?

Connecting us to times long past,
Is memory true, or false, we ask?
To weave a story, to give God glory,
To dream a dream, or nightmare gory?

What are memories for?
To be a human, safe from danger,
Or so afraid — beware that stranger!
What are memories for?

Without memory, we cannot learn —
Life’s long lessons grow strong and stern,
And yet, through hardship, we are stronger,
In trials and tempests, fear we conquer.
