Counting Jacarandas

[The Jacaranda is a type of tree from Central and South America, and is often found growing in warmer climates,
such as parts of California.  It is has lovely blue to purple-blue flowers, or sometimes even white.
The seed capsules look somewhat like hockey pucks.]

My spouse and I,
We go for walks
In neighborhoods,
And sometimes talk.
We stroll, we speed,
We take our ease —
Counting jacarandas.
He strolls, I speed,
Then turn around
To  match his pace,
So we can talk.
And all the while
We take our ease —
Counting jacarandas.
Some days we all
Must take a break,
Slow down the race,
Reduce the pace,
Do silly things
And laugh awhile —
Counting jacarandas.

It’s A Wonderful Life

[ This poem coincides with
the theme of the movie
“It’s a Wonderful Life”. ]

I wasn’t rich
Nor too well known;
Not many people
Knew my home.

Not stunning,
Nor too much to look at —
Might even say
I was a bit fat.

But should I say
I wasted time,
If for a while,
I made you smile?

If for a while
I eased your cares,
And let you know
Somebody cares?

If once
I made you laugh
And then,
We both began to laugh again?

No one’s a failure,
As they say,
If he has friends
Who by him stay.

Glory-Day Girl

Blackberries bursting
On briarly bushes.
The sun beams so bright,
Her eyelids it pushes.

The bees they are buzzing,
The butterflies bright,
The flowers are splashing —
A glorious sight.

Picturesque painting,
The colors of nature.
She laughs and she dances;
The glory-day makes her.

A song she is singing,
Her soul it takes flight.
When sunshine is happy,
She laughs in delight.

Longing for Home

Where is the place
I can call home?

At ocean shores,
Or mountains high,
In grassy plains,
Or deserts nigh?

Near rushing streams,
By forests green,
Or just in dreams
Will I be free?

Will I find rest
Upon a path
Strewn with my tears,
Or might I laugh?

In God I must
Seek out my rest.
And then at last
Will end my quest.
