Now is the Time
Now is the time to be living.
The events of the past are for learning.
The future, for what we are hoping.
Make memories now while you can.
The past is no longer at hand.
Don’t build the future on sand.
Now is the time to be living.
The events of the past are for learning.
The future, for what we are hoping.
Make memories now while you can.
The past is no longer at hand.
Don’t build the future on sand.
In younger days,
So many ways to play.
Time stretched forever
in endless summer.
I rode a bike,
Or climbed a tree,
Or rolled on skates
Or skateboard.
Those berry fights,
And flying kites!
The six-gun caps,
The endless laps
Round playgrounds.
The hide and seek,
The flowing creek
With newts to play with.
The rainy days
In oilskin coats;
We fashioned moats
And marched;
We were “The Rain Squad.”
Umbrellas? – No,
We liked the flow
Of water on our oilskin.
Collected pillbugs,
Or were they sowbugs?
Made mudpies,
And my mom allowed us.
Stayed out ‘til dinner;
That was a winner.
Those days are gone;
I don’t know how,
Or why they were
The way they were.
I only know
They’re part of me.
What are memories for?
To haunt, to taunt, and still harass?
To calm, to heal, forgive at last?
What are memories for?
Connecting us to times long past,
Is memory true, or false, we ask?
To weave a story, to give God glory,
To dream a dream, or nightmare gory?
What are memories for?
To be a human, safe from danger,
Or so afraid — beware that stranger!
What are memories for?
Without memory, we cannot learn —
Life’s long lessons grow strong and stern,
And yet, through hardship, we are stronger,
In trials and tempests, fear we conquer.
All things must pass;
Not many things last.
Let go of regrets;
Let go of the past.
As for the present,
Just live it well.
Seek first God’s heaven;
Don’t foster hell.
As for the future,
It’s a blank slate.
Trust it to God;
He knows your fate.
Into God’s hands,
Put everything.
Why fret or worry? –
Won’t accomplish a thing.
Easy to say —
I worry, too.
But I just want to wish you
A year that is new!
Where has the past gone?
No one believes in history
People panic about things
That all happened before
Study the mystery
Of humanity’s progress and regress
Of climates come and gone
And come again
We don’t need to panic
It’s all happened before
Learn from the past –
Isn’t that wisdom?
Not to dismiss disasters
Or pass off plagues
But
It’s all happened before
Be prepared
Right here, right now
Is where I’ll find God’s will,
Somehow.
Not far ahead,
Not far behind,
But in this place,
God’s will is found.
Not in the future,
Not in the past.
Only what’s done for God
Will last.
