Cicada Circus

They come in swarms, they call them broods,
Their buzzing, constantly renewed.
They sometimes light upon your arm,
Though do not mean a real harm.

Their eyes bug out, a little red,
From a black oval (that’s their head).
Their wings, like glass with yellow veins,
And little legs with orange strains.

The rhythm of their coming varies —
Some 13 years, though others tarry
For 17 years — the species vary —
And there are some who yearly come.

We wake up to their constant hum —
Unharmonious, instrumental thrum.
A background noise you can’t escape,
Though birds will gladly seal their fate.

Factually, they’re pretty cute,
Potential mates might give pursuit.
But if one happens in your hair,
A squeal of fright you might declare.

Listening for God’s Voice

You woo me in the quiet places;
It’s there you fill me with Your graces.
I long for silence, to still the voices
That tempt me onto errant courses.

The noise of living makes me weary
(Though noise of loved ones can be cheery!).
The “noise” of nature, by contrast,
Brings calm and peace, or makes us wary.

When list’ning for Your mighty plan,
I calmly sit, or kneel, or stand,
Or even on a quiet walk –
By grace, or chance, I’ll hear You talk.

Grant me, O Lord, that blesséd grace –
No matter what the time or place –
In noise or quiet, at work or rest,
By Your sweet voice to then be blessed.

Lord, I Need Your Song

Lord, I need Your song in me
To still the noise around.
And keep my heart in tune with Yours;
Let me be heaven bound.

In daily work, in drudgery
Let spirit sing Your praise,
That I will let Your gifts to me
My heart and mind amaze.

Let not my soul so weary be
That I neglect Your painter’s stroke —
Let all the tasks ordained for me
A masterpiece evoke.

And soon a heavenly chorus will sing —
An orchestra and heavenly choir.
With joy and thanks in perfect tune,
And Spirit’s joyful fire.
