I Live in a Dream

I LIVE IN A DREAM

I live in a dream …

I live in a little English village
Where everyone knows each other.

I go to the butcher shop
And meet Rev. Franklin Graham and Pope Francis.
At the tea shop,
I enjoy tea and tisane with Agatha Christie,
Hercule Poirot, and Miss Marple.
I also see J. R. R. Tolkien, C. S. Lewis,
G. K. Chesterton, and Dorothy Sayers there.

I say hello to John Henry Newman,
Martin Luther, and St. Francis on the street.

I take a trip to the United States…

I meet Hilary Clinton and Donald Trump –
Through a series of misfortunes,
They have lost most of their money
And have become very humble people;
They regularly meet for coffee at their local coffee house.

I go to a poor section of town.
The unemployed people are busy
Keeping their neighborhood clean,
Working in the community garden,
And going to school part of the day to better their lives.

I go to a rich neighborhood …
No one is home because they are in the poor neighborhood
Distributing clothing, helping in the community garden,
And teaching English to immigrants.

This is my dream …

I no longer worry what you think of me;
I focus on Jesus and try to do His will.

I no longer try to prove I’m right and you’re wrong;
I respect your opinion and will state mine if you’re willing to listen.

I have peace in my heart
Because I have let go,
And given everything to God.

[Reconciling different elements in my life: Christians
with differing viewpoints, political factions, the rich
and the poor, and my own inner conflicts.]

Longing for God’s Love

I seek in the silence
A word from You,
The key to my existence.

For once,
There are no voices around me.

I try to listen …

I beat against the doors
Of Your heart —
Will You let me in?

Or perhaps it’s the other way —
Will I let You in?

I seek for Your answer,
I wait for Your voice,
I hope for Your love.

I struggle and strain
To find You, to know You;
It will not be in vain.

What Are You Made For?

What are you made for?
Is it crying and tears,
For nightmares and fears?

What are you made for?
For feeling alone,
For being forlorn?

Does your soul long for more?
Do you stare at the door,
Wondering when it will open?

Are you longing for love?
Do you look up above,
Or mostly in all the wrong places?

Be still and just listen,
Receive what you’re missing.
He’ll fill you up if you let Him.

Motivations

[Here I am imagining (sometimes about myself) the deeper motivations people
have for their actions, the motivations that we might not be aware of.]

When I turned my face away from you,
Maybe I just didn’t want you to see me cry.

When I didn’t speak,
Maybe I was afraid I would yell at you.

When I laughed loudly and annoyingly,
Maybe I needed attention.

When I hurt you with my words,
Maybe I hadn’t dealt with my own hurt.

When I seemed to ignore your pain,
Maybe I hadn’t let God heal my pain.

When I got violent,
Maybe I was extremely frustrated,
And no one had ever taught me how to deal with it.
No one was there to guide me,
To help me find better ways to deal with anger.

When you listened to me,
I began to heal.

When I asked your forgiveness,
I began to heal.

Everybody’s Talking

Everybody’s talking,
Fighting all the time.
Think that their opinion
Is wise and so sublime.

Have their own perspective,
Think it’s the only way,
Can’t listen to another,
Must jump into the fray.

Can’t see the other viewpoint,
Don’t let others have their say.
Must always be the winner
Must always have their way.

They never ask another,
How do you see things?
How does your perspective
Fit all that’s happening?

We’ve got to learn to listen,
Each one of us has guilt.
Let’s use our ears more often,
Our lips have got to chill.
